Let Go

(no subject)

He had been seeing her for over a year now. She was mostly on time and her appointments were usually no trouble at all. That is, until she started asking him questions which he’d rather not answer.

“Could you open wide for me, Sandy?”
“Aaaaaaaah …” She stuck out her wet, insolent tongue.
“Seems like it for sure. Come on, hop off the chair please.”
“What have I got, Doctor?”
“A case of the common cold. Take a day or two off school, take nice long naps and consume a regular dose of Vitamin C.”
Sandy hopped off the chair but didn’t move from her place in the room.
“Doctor? Could I ask you something?”
“Sure, what is it?”
“Okay, there’s a boy that I like and I see him every morning on the bus and I want to ask him out. Should I do it, Doctor?” her anticipation showing on every feature of her face.
He sighed. “Just tell him your true feelings and everything will be fine. I’m sure of it.”
He turned around and discreetly rolled his eyes. Children these days, growing up faster than they should be. Honestly!
“Really!? I knew it!” she flashed a smile and left.

He had also been her mother’s doctor for well over a year too. She was a good woman – genuinely concerned about her children, and she was very patient while he was treating her. That is, until matters were brought up that concerned her only daughter. Then there was no escape.

“Could you roll up your sleeve please, Mrs. Harris?”
“Is it infected?” Her plump face held a worried expression. “I mean, it’s been like this for a long time – shouldn’t it be healing faster?”
“Nope, it’s just a scratch. Try not to worry too much; it’s not good for you. Just keep it away from anything harmful like dishwashing liquid. Your daughter could help you do the dishes while it recovers”
“Ah, thank you, Doctor. You’re so kind”
“No problem” He opened the door for the relieved woman’s leave.
“Oh, speaking of my daughter, she’s been worrying me lately. Has she told you anything important?”
“Sorry, Mrs. Harris. As a doctor, it is my obligation to keep everything between my patient and myself private. But for the record, she hasn’t been telling me anything. There’s no need to worry about her, she’s probably just growing up. Like I said, don’t worry!”
“Okay then. Sorry for bothering you”
“No, it’s fine. I get these kinds of questions all the time” He had to smile and show some empathy. Seeing the poor woman so desperate to find out about her own daughter – it was kind of distressing, but this sort of case was dreadfully common. The sort of relationships that were formed in society these days. Honestly!
“Thank you doctor,” she smiled warily as she left the room, “you’re very understanding.”

He saw them in his office very often. The mother must have been either extremely paranoid or was just over-protective. Often when he examined them, there was little to no problem with their health at all.

“Sandy! How are you today?” He had to pretend to be interested. The girl got very tiring very fast.
“I’m good thanks, Doctor! And you?” Her voice was like one of a noisy bird in the morning which you just wanted to ignore for as long as possible.
“Oh, I’m oka—”
“Hey, hey! Will my finger be okay?” she rudely interrupted, “I jarred it during netball and it wasn’t bandaged properly at school. Could you please fix it for me?”
He sighed.
“Alright, give me your hand. Let’s get you out of here quickly, if that’s the only problem you’ve got”
He unwrapped the poor bandage job and started fresh with some clean material.
“Actually, there’s another problem” She started off slowly.
“What is it?” He just wanted to wrap her finger up so tightly that it would drop off in a day or two, but reason within reminded him that his job was to heal people, not hurt them.
“My mum is so annoying! She is so bossy! Doesn’t she understand that I have a social life!?” She started her answer as soon as he asked his question. It seemed as though she was ready to blurt out her answer even if he didn’t ask the question.
“What happened?” The bandaging was almost done.
“I can’t stand her! She made me do the dishes while I was on the phone with that boy! He probably never wants to speak with me ever again!!”
He shook his head. “I’m sure your mother didn’t mean any harm. Try to spend a little more time with her; I’m sure that in the end the both of you will appreciate it”.
“… okay” she started hesitantly, “if you say so. Anyway, you were right about expressing my feelings! Thanks, Doctor!”
“You’re welcome. Now be careful, try to not get hurt so often.” And she was gone.

“Morning, Mrs. Harris”
“Good morning, Doctor! I just wanted to let you know that the scratch on my arm is doing okay now. Thank you for all your help.”
“There was nothing much wrong with it in the first place, Mrs. Harris. You’re welcome.”
“Oh, I just wanted to know, how could I get closer to my daughter? She’s really been very upset with me lately, and I’m not sure why!”
So she didn’t just want to let him know about her recovery. He paused to think of an answer.
“Well, I’m sure that it’s just the hormones in her body making her act this way. I’m sure that she still dearly loves you at heart – she’s just finding it difficult to express herself, that’s all. Try spending a little more time with her? I’m sure she actually wants to be with you a lot of the time. After all, you are her mother.”
“Hmm, thank you for your advice, Doctor. You’re such a clever man.” She smiled sincerely. “How could I ever repay you?”
“No need to worry. Talking to my patients is part of my job” he smiled back.

“Hey there, Doc’!” Sandy smiled.
“Hi Sandy.” He replied. No smile this time, he was getting sick of this.
“The finger on my other hand … I jarred it.”
“It seems to be bandaged properly this time, though.” He remarked upon inspection.
“Oh, really? That’s okay then.”
“Well good, if that’s all, then I’m going down to the café over the road to grab a bite” He began to leave.
“Actually, Doctor, that’s not all”
He took a deep breath in, and then a soothing deep breath out. He turned around. What was it now?
“Yes, Sandy?”
“Well, like you said to, I spent a lot of time with my mum! She’s actually a really cool person! Who would have thought, we have the same taste in a lot of things! So, I guess, thank you for helping me!” She smiled.
“Oh, okay. No worries, then.” He turned to leave, again.
“Actually …”
“What now?” It wasn’t worth the energy to turn another 180 degrees.
“Well, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my mum, and well,” she paused, “I think I’m in love with my mum …”

Years and years went by in a second. He just stood there and his soul left him completely. What had he done? Maybe this wasn’t the job for him. Maybe he wasn’t meant to converse with his patients; offer advice. Yes, he’d go across the road for a coffee and a biscuit, and maybe he’d look for a new job tomorrow. That’s right, he’d find a new job. Maybe something in the field of law or maybe science. That’s right. That’s what he would do.

People should figure out their problems on their own. After all, why burden others with trivial matters and lead life in the way they dictate to you?
